Lutheran Social Services Senior Companions are available to assist seniors age 60+ with free, non-medical in-home services in Valley City.
“Our volunteers help seniors maintain the highest level of independent living possible in their own homes,” said Andrea Lang, eastern North Dakota program coordinator.
All senior companions are at least 55 years of age, pre-screened, trained and have a desire to make a positive difference in the lives of other seniors in their community. Services are provided without regard to clients’ race, religion, gender or economic status.
Senior companions usually visit once a week to assist with a variety of needs and activities, including conversation and listening, social recreation, accompaniment to appointments, meal planning and preparation, personal care, home management, medication reminders, completing forms, assistance with obtaining services, memory stimulation, reading, writing letters and much more. Senior companions also provide respite care for family caregivers.
“The one-on-one companionship and daily living assistance provided by senior companions can help seniors improve their quality of life, reduce feelings of loneliness and build motivation to stay active and interested in life and the community,” Lang said. Receiving services may also delay the need for higher levels of care.
