A landmark study released by the Great Plains Food Bank and Feeding America reports that an estimated 8,400 people receive emergency food assistance each week from a food pantry, soup kitchen or emergency shelter served by the Great Plains Food Bank. Nationally, an estimated 5.7 million people receive food assistance each week from emergency feeding programs served by one of Feeding America’s more than 200 food banks, including the Great Plains Food Bank.
Hunger in America 2010: North Dakota’s Reality provides for the first time, an in-depth look at who is hungry, why they are seeking assistance, and how their needs are met. It offers socio-demographic data on individuals and families who struggle with hunger; outlines tough choices individuals must make in order to feed themselves and their families; provides a framework on the role federal nutrition programs play in meeting hunger needs of those served by the charitable feeding network; and it presents the perspective and challenges faced by emergency feeding programs working on the front line.
