1/30/2012

Fargo, ND – The Great Plains Food Bank, a program of Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota, is pleased to announce that Red River Valley Community Action is certified as a 5 Star Food Pantry. Red River Community Action is located in Grand Forks and assists low-income families and individuals in Nelson, Pembina, Walsh and Grand Forks counties achieve economic self-sufficiency.

The 5 Star Food Pantry is a certification program offered by the Great Plains Food Bank. Partner food pantries are encouraged to apply for the three year status which grants them the highest honor possible for a North Dakota food pantry. Partner agencies complete a 78 question application where they are asked questions on their operations, volunteer recruitment and engagement, breadth of community support, programmatic sustainability, financial strength and strategic planning.

In addition to the special recognition and accolades, the 5 Star Food Pantry serves as a role model for other food pantries. 5 Star certified agencies have a willingness to adapt to the changing hunger needs of a community and demonstrated best practices in their field.

“Red River Valley Community Action runs a superb food pantry and we are excited about the opportunity to give them this exclusive honor. The communities of Michigan and Grand Forks should be proud to have this well-run organization in their communities,” says Melissa Sobolik, Director of Agency & Client Services. “We are proud to stand alongside them in their fight to end hunger.”
