Great Plains Food Bank receives $90,000 in grants from Walmart Foundation

Fargo, ND – The Great Plains Food Bank, a program of Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota, received two grants totaling $90,000 from the Walmart Foundation. The grants, which were given to the nonprofit organization through the Walmart Foundation’s Associate Choice and North Dakota State Giving Program, will be used to address childhood hunger and expand services for families and seniors struggling with hunger in rural areas across the state.

“We are very fortunate to have partners such as Walmart with a high level of commitment throughout their organization addressing this important issue,” said Steve Sellent, director of the Great Plains Food Bank. “Hunger touches the lives of one in 11 people across North Dakota. With their support we can deepen our commitment in addressing childhood hunger, and extend our reach even further by bringing food into additional communities in underserved rural counties through our Mobile Food Pantry and Outreach Pantry Program.”

The grant was presented to the Great Plains Food Bank during a check presentation ceremony held today at a Walmart Superstore in Fargo. The ceremony included remarks from Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker, along with other community leaders and Walmart Associates. Walmart Market Manager Clint Harris presented the grant checks to Great Plains Food Bank representatives.

“The Great Plains Food Bank makes a huge difference in our community and in communities across our state,” Walaker said. “Without the generous support from the Walmart Foundation, the Great Plains Food Bank would not be able to provide these vital services, which feed thousands of hungry North Dakotans.”

“The Walmart Foundation is very pleased to be supporting the Great Plains Food Bank and is committed to helping those in need in the communities where we serve,” Harris added. “Through this grant, we are hopeful that they can continue to provide food and essential services to families, right here in Fargo, who need help putting food on the table.”

The grants to the Great Plains Food Bank were made possible through the Walmart Foundation’s Associate Choice and North Dakota State Giving Programs. Through these programs, the Walmart Foundation supports organizations that create opportunities so people can live better. The Associate Choice program gives Walmart associates the opportunity to vote online for a nonprofit organization to receive funding in their home state. The State Giving Program strives to award grants that have a long-lasting, positive impact on communities across the country.

To be considered for support, prospective grantee organizations must submit applications through the Walmart Foundation State Giving Program’s online grant application. Applicants must have a current 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status in order to meet the program’s minimum eligibility criteria.
