Flood of Caring informational event set March 8 in Mandan

BISMARCK, ND - An event aimed at helping meet the unresolved needs of flood survivors in Burleigh and Morton Counties is set for March 8 in Mandan.

Lutheran Disaster Response, a program of Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota, is organizing the Flood of Caring event from 3-7 pm Thursday, March 8, at the Brave Center, 901 Division St. NW, Mandan.

Representatives of at least eight nonprofit and government agencies with a role in flood recovery or that may otherwise offer valuable resources to flood survivors will staff booths to share information about their programs and answer questions about topics including home repair, flood insurance, taxes, the spring flood forecast and more.

Flood of Caring will also feature information on wellness and managing stress. Crisis counselors, outreach workers and other professionals will be able to offer help and direct people to further information about self-care following traumatic events.

“Flood of Caring is geared to meet the recovery needs of people affected by last year’s Missouri River flooding,” said Robert Lukes, the western North Dakota site coordinator for Lutheran Social Services’ Lutheran Disaster Response program. “Some people have delayed repairs or other necessary projects because they are nervous about what sort of spring we’ll be facing this year,” Lukes said. “Hopefully we can help everyone move forward with their recovery while offering encouragement and practical assistance.”

Flood of Caring is free and open to the public and door prizes will be awarded. For more information, contact Robert Lukes at rlukes@lssnd.org or at 701-630-2278.

Lutheran Social Services’ Lutheran Disaster Response program provides help before and after a disaster through preparedness training, recovery response and volunteer coordination.

Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota is a nonprofit social services agency serving thousands of North Dakotans from offices in five cities with 19 programs that strengthen individuals, families and communities without regard to clients’ race, religion, gender or economic status.
